Cash transactions at customs offices will cease with the new Güm-Kart — short for the customs card — said Foreign Trade Minister Kürşad Tüzmen. “Everyone will use their cards; procedures will be faster and registered. Misuses of cash payments in customs offices will end,” Tüzmen emphasized. Several government bodies will take part in the transition process to an e-Government system. The minister mentioned that 113 customs offices have begun services online, and importers and exporters can complete 80 percent of their procedures without leaving their offices. “Ninety-six percent of export declarations and 78 percent of import declarations can be made in 24 hours,” said Tüzmen. “A database is being compiled to help customs. The minister pointed out that improvements in transparency, accessibility and good governance of customs administration had boosted the foreign trade of Turkey to $220 billion.
