Trade in free trade zones increased by only 2 percent in 2006, rising to $23.8 billion. Sector representatives emphasized that 2006 was not a positive year for free zones but think that new legislation will improve the situation.
According to Foreign Trade Undersecretariat data, the highest amount of trade in 2006 belonged to the Istanbul leather products free zone, with $7 billion. The Aegean free zone totaled trade volume of $4 billion. An amount of $3.2 billion passed through İstanbul’s Atatürk Airport. The İstanbul Thrace free zone recorded $2.4 billion and the Bursa free zone $1.9 billion. The lowest amounts belonged to the Mardin free zone with $1.8 million, the Rize free zone with $8 million and the Trabzon free zone with $13.6 million.
