New registration vehicles in 2006 reach 1.15 mln

Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has released the figures for new registration vehicles for December and the whole of the year 2006.
Total number of new registration vehicles rose in 2006 to 1,149,744 up from 988,620 in 2005.
The TÜİK English-language statement on the matter goes as follows:
Inside the 75 740 motor vehicles registered to the traffic in December 2006, cars were take put in the first place with the ratio 43.3 % (32 816) and it was fallowed by small trucks with the ratio 25.4 % (19 223), motorcycles (more…)

Nuclear power plants bill passed in Parliamentary Commission

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) Industry, Trade, Energy, Natural Resources, and Informatics&Technology Commission has passed the nuclear power plants bill with some changes at its meeting, yesterday.
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Hilmi Güler told the commission that the new draft bill is better then the former in bringing much less burden to the public finances and they would collect bids from private investors and (more…)

The government’s decision to postpone the privatization of three electricity distribution grids, TEKEL’s tobacco arm along with the announcement that Halkbank would not in fact go for a block sale but rather a 25 percent IPO, was unexpected. Though FDI projections for 2007 have been revised, predictions on the inflow of foreign investment remain robust for the year.

Erdoğan rebukes opponents of the EU

Prime Minister Erdoğan directed warnings at those in Turkey who strongly oppose EU membership, and chided them by saying “things do not move on just by singing songs.”

Erdoğan said having representatives of global capital companies in Turkey was a clear indication of Turkey’s success in becoming a center for investments. “I dedicate this success to those who are against the EU,” said Erdoğan. He also noted that 8,203 out of 14,955 foreign investors in Turkey are from the EU.

Turkey innovation leader in the developing world

Turkey took a place in the latest European Commission world innovation index, surpassing India, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Poland, Romania, Latvia and Greek Cyprus. Finland was the first in the commission’s index with 76 points, followed by Sweden with 74 points. Switzerland was third with 71 points, (more…)

‘Competition between Turkey, China will rise’

An article published in the prestigious US think-tank Jamestown Foundation’s China Brief claimed that Turkey and China are in a constant state of war economically.
The article, signed by John C.K. Daly, foresaw a hotter competition between Turkey and China for an increased share of the world’s textile market and regional energy reserves. Mortgage law passes without tax incentives

Turkey finally got its mortgage law, expected to help people own their own homes by paying installments almost equal to their monthly rents.

The Parliament passed the bill late Wednesday evening. The tax incentives article, which the government had fiercely opposed arguing that incentives clearly ran counter to the economic program the country is pursuing at present, was pulled out from the law at the last moment. This move made it harder for low income people to have a house via mortgage loans.
