The lowest unregistered employment rate was realized in wage earners, according to research published in ‘Sendikam’ magazine — periodical of United Metal Workers Union. There were 22.8 million employees in Turkey, 48.6 percent of which work unregistered. The Turkish Statistical Institute’s (Turkstat) recent data mention that the unregistered employment rate in wage earners was 22.8 percent. This rate was 91.8 percent in family workers (workers at a family business without salary), 64.7 percent in self-employed and 28.4 percent in employers. The number of wage earners increased by 80 percent between 1989 and 2005. The share of wage earners in total employment increased to 47 percent from 32 percent in the same period. This mainly stemmed from decreases in self-employed workers and family workers.
