Free trade with Ukraine first step of strategic partnership

Ties between Ukraine and Turkey look set to be strengthened in the wake of a free trade agreement between the two countries, according to Turkey’s state minister for foreign trade. Kürşad Tüzmen, speaking on Tuesday at the beginning of a Turkey-Ukraine Commercial and Economic Commission (TEİK) sixth period meeting, emphasized the need to complete procedures regarding the free trade agreement as soon as possible. Bilateral trade between Turkey and Ukraine has reached over $4 billion, noted Tüzmen.Tüzmen suggested establishing a Turkey desk in the Foreign Investors’ Coordination Department of the Economy Ministry in Ukraine. He also stated that Turkey wanted to commit to more infrastructure and superstructure investments in Ukraine. Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Volodymyr Rybak described Turkey as one of Ukraine’s most important commercial partners.
At the airport while leaving for Ukraine, Tüzmen announced that Turkey’s exports had exceeded $90 billion for the period March 24, 2006 to March 24, 2007, representing an increase of 28.5 percent over the preceding one-year period.
Meanwhile, on another occasion Tuesday, Russian Federation Council Chairman Sergey Mironov participated in the meeting of the Turkish-Russian Business Council, which is operating under the roof of Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEİK).
