As liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) becomes more widely used, its market size in Turkey is growing.
According to the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Market Report 2006, prepared by the Energy Market Regulatory Agency (EPDK), Turkey’s LPG market is worth more than $5 billion. The report was presented at a Friday meeting attended by EPDK Chairman Yusuf Günay and its LPG department head Güngör Azim Tuna. The report indicated that the LPG sector, established in the early 1960s in Turkey, is well established. As of the date the report was published, the LPG market consists of 56 LPG distribution licenses, 80 LPG filling and storage licenses, 34 LPG transportation licenses, 14 LPG tube manufacture licenses, 113 LPG tube control/inspection units, repair and maintenance licenses and 6,172 LPG automotive LPG distributorship licenses. There are a total of 6,468 licenses.
During 2006, Turkish consumers used 1.55 million tons of LPG for their automobiles — 1.49 million tons as tube gas and 475,000 tons of bulk gas — totaling 3.52 million tons.
LPG distributorship activities in Turkey involve 3,014 transport vehicles and seven LPG tankers.
While 11,394 LPG tube distributors provide services to domestic consumers, there are 40,666 small and medium LPG bulk consumers.
Turkey’s 157 filling facilities fill 5.4 million tons of household gas canisters, while tanker filling capacity is 1.4 million tons.
The country has a storage capacity of 309,212 tons.
With almost 1.5 million vehicles using LPG as fuel, Turkey is the second-largest LPG user among European countries, following Poland.
Distributors imported 2.44 million tons of LPG in 2006 from 19 countries, while the Turkish Petroleum Refineries Corporation (Tüpraş) imported 374,971 tons.
