The countdown for the İzmit Gulf transit highway, an important project in transportation which has been on the agenda for a long time, has started. Firstly, the Highways General Directorate will send its report on the suspension bridge project across the İzmit Gulf for approval by the State Planning Organization (DPT). The bidding process will begin after that approval.
Tenders for the 420-kilometer-long highway — a 377 kilometer toll road and 43 kilometers of linkages — will be offered within the year. The construction of the bridge will follow a build-operate-transfer (BOT) model and the main span between the piers of the suspension bridge over the İzmit Gulf will be 1,700 meters and the total length will be 3,000 meters. The new road will link Gebze — an industrial area just east of İstanbul — and İzmir through Bursa and Balıkesir, industrial cities on the south coast of the Marmara Sea. The tender requirements of the project, bidding documents and drafts, feasibility reports for the land that the road will pass through and the application program are still being prepared. After the approval of the DPT, the Highways Directorate will launch the international bidding process.
