European Union countries and lawmakers have reached a preliminary deal on cutting the cost of using a mobile phone abroad, a top European Commission official said on Tuesday.Fabio Colasanti, head of the EU executive’s telecoms unit, confirmed the deal. It will have to be put to (the European) Parliament and member states, he told Reuters as he left a meeting of EU lawmakers, states and the Commission. The price cap for consumers in the first year would be set at 49 euro cents ($0.66) per minute for making calls abroad and 24 euro cents for receiving them, an EU source said. The source said the wholesale cap would be set at 30 euro cents per minute to make calls. These charges would fall over time, the source said.
