The Mining Exploration Institute (MTA) has announced that its $2 million, eight-year-long project on the outskirts of Mount Kaz in Ayvacık, Çanakkale has yielded fruit.MTA officials said they had found signs of an important gold reserve, with analysis — at a lab in Canada — of samples taken from 7,000 meters depth revealing the reserve to be around 50 million tons at a workable concentration of 0.5 grams gold/ton. After the analysis, the management of the mining field will be transferred to the Mine Works Directorate and a bid will be launched for its operation rights. Ayvacık Mayor Ünal Şahin said the mine has an economic importance for the region, but naturally that extraction works must be done without threatening human lives or the environment.
