Turkish Airlines’ (THY) passenger traffic rose 15.9 percent to 19.6 million last year, the flag carrier said on Thursday.

The company said previously it targeted passenger traffic of 20 million in 2007. It aims to raise this figure to 24 million this year.In a statement to the Istanbul Stock Exchange, THY said revenue passenger kilometres jumped 19.3 percent to 30.268 million.

It posted a net operating profit of 194.19 million YTL in the first nine months of 2007, up 52.4 percent from the same period last year.

Late 2007 Turkish Airlines has announced plans to expand its range of services to other countries and their intention to see more planes making more flights to Turkey over the course of the next few years. THY achieved significant income growth especially from new destinations to Middle East, Africa and Far East. Growth in international flights overtook domestic expansion last year. In the first nine months of the year, revenue from international flights made up three-quarters of ticket revenue.

Available seat kilometres climbed 12.7 percent to 41.618 million and the number of landings rose 10.7 percent to 168,000. Cargo mail volume rose 12.8 percent to 180,000 tonnes.

THY is set to become in March 2008 a member of the Star Alliance, world’s largest airline alliance.
