Foreign news agencies reported on Wednesday that Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan has signed a document approving participation of German energy company RWE as a sixth partner in the EU-supported Nabucco project while the project’s general manager refrained from confirming the company’s participation.

In response to media reports that the Turkish government has given its approval for Germany’s RWE AG to join Nabucco, the project’s general manager said confidentiality agreements prohibit him from naming the new partner before the closing of the formal approval process, which he expects at that start of February.

The pipeline is of great importance in terms of diversification of gas supply routes to ensure energy security of Europe. The founding members of the Nabucco consortium are Austria’s OMV AG, Hungary’s MOL Nyrt, Botas of Turkey, Transgas of Romania, and Bulgaria’s Bulgargaz.

There are claims that issue of the French company, Gas de France, joining the project as a seventh stakeholder is now under consideration.

The project’s general manager also underlined that while commercial negotiations have been finalized, the formal approval process within Nabucco’s shareholders’ companies is still ongoing.
