Number of bank branches, bankers on the rise in 2007

Turkey saw an increase in the number of bank branches to 7,618 in 2007, with 158,559 staff members employed.
According to data released on the Turkish Association of Banks Web site, the number of banks operating in the sector reached 50 in 2007. Of these, 33 were savings banks, 13 were development and investment banks and four were participation banks. Three out of the 33 saving banks were public, whereas 11 were private and the remaining 18 were foreign banks.
The data also show that the rise in the number of the bank branches and employees continued in 2007. The number of total bank branches in development and investment banks increased by 769 to reach 7,618 at the year’s close. The average number of branches per bank was 229; this figure was 734 in savings banks with public capital, 330 in savings banks with private capital and 97 in banks with foreign capital.
The total number of bank employees increased by 15,416 — or 10.8 percent over 2006 — reaching 158,559 in 2007. The yearend figures demonstrate that the number of employees in fund banks has decreased by eight, whereas the number of workers at public savings banks increased by 1,833, in private savings banks by 1,929, and in development and investment banks by 749.
Because of the acquisition of private banks by the banks with foreign capital, the number of employees in foreign saving banks has increased by 10,913.
Twenty-six percent of the total number of bank workers are employed in the public banks, 47 in private banks and 23 in the foreign saving banks, whereas the remaining 3 percent work at the development and investment banks. The number of employees per bank in the category of saving banks was 4,644, whereas this figure was 13,685 in public banks, 6,832 in private banks and 2,039 in foreign banks.
Forty-nine percent of the employees in the banking sector were women in 2007. This figure was 36 in the public saving banks, 54 in private saving banks, 39 in fund banks, 54 in foreign banks and 32 in the development and investment banks.
