Turkcell may buy phone company in Eastern Europe

Turkcell, Turkey’s biggest mobile-phone company, may buy a cellular operator in eastern Europe as it seeks to grow outside Turkey, said Turkcell’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Süreyya Ciliv at a press conference in Istanbul yesterday.

“Turkcell is interested in various companies in eastern Europe,” Ciliv said, declining to give further details.

Turkcell has a unit in Ukraine and is also in talks to acquire a stake in Syriatel, which has a 54 percent share of the Syrian cellular market. Those discussions should reach a ‘successful conclusion’ by the end of March, Ciliv said. (more…)

Sabancı to invest in energy and retail

The confidence in global markets has been discredited due to a structural imbalance caused by the United States subprime mortgage crisis, said Sabancı Holding Chairwoman Güler Sabancı in a meeting to announce the holding’s 2007 results and expectations for this year yesterday.

“This crisis affected expectations, brought on pessimism and introduced a global deceleration and even a recession jeopardy. We should gain a new perspective for the future,” she said evaluating the financial outlook of 2007.

There is a liquid surplus in developed markets, said Sabancı, adding, “eventually this accumulated liquidity will be directed somewhere. Turkey should not miss out on that opportunity.” (more…)

Historic heritage vs tourism profits debated at panel

The decision by the Four Seasons Hotel to enlarge its existing building over an archaeological site in the historic Sultanahmet neighborhood of Istanbul has sparked debate over whether the desire to preserve the city’s heritage is being sacrificed to possible profit from tourism.

The hotel, a transformed prison from Ottoman times which itself was built on Byzantine and Roman ruins, currently has a 130-room capacity that it plans to increase by 50 with the additional building. The extension has drawn severe criticism despite the fact that the hotel has been granted the legal right to do so. (more…)

Turkey 49th in property rights protection

Turkey’s protection of intellectual property rights has been ranked 49th among 115 countries in the 2008 International Property Rights Index (IPRI), indicating that Turkey has much work to do. 
Turkey’s rank was 51 in terms of its legal and political environment for property rights. With respect to physical property rights, Turkey ranked 52nd. It was placed 51st in the general ranking of the index. Finland topped the general ranking list and it was followed by Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany. Despite its fame as a leading global figure for intellectual property rights, the US was only 19th in the general ranking. (more…)

Vodafone: Turkcell blocking number portability

Vodafone Turkey CEO Attila Vitai has said that although his company has been requesting the implementation of number portability since it started doing business in Turkey, market leader Turkcell had curbed these efforts, leading to what he termed a waste of resources from consumers’ use of multiple phones and SIM cards. 
“We want to prevent this [waste],” Vitai said, adding that number portability was also important for competitiveness. Vitai emphasized that customers should be able to choose the best service provider without having to change their phone number, currently not a possibility in Turkey. (more…)

EBRD to offer new financing facilities to Turkey

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which is getting prepared to withdraw from the countries in central Europe, plans to make investments in Turkey in the upcoming period.

Until 2010, EBRD will cut its financial support to the 8 former Eastern Block countries which have become EU member states in 2004, sources said.

The bank, known as the “World Bank” of Europe, plans to intensify its activities and investments in Turkey after such date. (more…)

Industry & Academy in technopark deal

Turkey’s first “Export Technopark” will be established in Istanbul’s Halkalı district via collaborative works of the Turkish Exporters’ Assembly (TİM) and Marmara University.The aim of the technopark, which will be established on a property owned by Marmara University, is to help industrialists to increase their competition power in the global market. At the technopark, the university officials and companies will act together to manufacture technological products that will bring higher added value to exports. The deal concerning the project, which is within the framework of the “Technological Development Regions Law,” will be reached in the upcoming days at a meeting with the participation of ministers.

  A production-based project

Marmara University and TİM will jointly establish a company to manage the technopark. The company is planned to start operating within three months following the signing of a contract. All institutions affiliated to TİM will have a work place at the technopark, according to the draft plan of the project. (more…)

Garanti to expand to Romania and Ukraine

General Electric (GE) is planning to develop Turkey’s Garanti Bank into a regional banking brand and aims to expand to Ukraine and Romania, Kürşat Özkan, Southwest Asia and Turkey director at GE told reporters Tuesday.

GE acquired 25.5 percent of Garanti Bank for $1.55 billion in August 2005 from Doğuş Group. “We are very pleased with Garanti’s performance and want to see the bank as a regional brand in the future,” Özkan said. “Garanti is one of the best banks not only in Turkey but in the whole world. This is the reason why we want to expand the strategic partnership and become a local bank in the region, by expanding in countries like Romania and Ukraine,” he added. (more…)
