A tender to construct two new tube tunnels beneath the sea in order to connect two sides of Turkish metropolis of Istanbul was postponed to April 30th.
This is the fourth time the tender is delayed upon request of some interested companies, executives of the Turkish Transportation Ministry said Thursday.
The tender was to be held in January 2008. However, it was delayed to March 17th to make sure the firms carry out geo-technical studies and create a more competitive atmosphere.
The Ministry then sent a note to the firms that got tender specifications, and told them that extensions and junctions were added to the project.
The project is expected to be completed in three years after construction is launched.
The tunnel will begin from Kazlicesme part of Florya-Sirkeci coast road (Kennedy Street) on the European side and end at Goztepe Junction on Ankara State Highway on the Anatolian side.
The two-tube and two-lane tunnel will be under the Istanbul Strait, one of the tubes will be from Anatolian side to the European and the other vice-versa.
Only light motor vehicles can use the 5.4-kilometer tunnel, 3.3 kilometers of which will be beneath the sea.
The project aims to ease traffic jam in Istanbul.
