Turkey on Thursday delayed the opening of a tender for the construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant.

The energy ministry was waiting for a government audit agency to comment on the tender’s technical details before potential bidders could be invited. Officials said it was not clear how long the delay would be.

Early February Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Hilmi Guler said that an invitation notice would be issued on February 21, inviting the interested companies to participate in the nuclear powerplant construction process in Turkey.

Guler also said two locations were determined in Turkey for the construction of nuclear powerplants, one in southern province of Mersin and the other in Black Sea province of Sinop.

A law to allow construction of the plants was approved in November after long delays, and Ankara hopes nuclear energy will help avert a power shortfall in the fast-growing emerging economy.

Turkey has been stepping up efforts to construct a 5000MW nuclear power plant by 2015 as part of efforts to prepare for a possible energy crisis due to a rising demand for electricity and to enhance the country’s energy self-sufficiency.
