The number of new vehicles registered for use in Turkey in 2007 shrank by 25 percent due to contraction in domestic demand, according to recently released data.

Around 1.15 million new vehicles were registered in 2006, but 2007 saw only 862,392 new vehicle registrations, according to Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) data on motor vehicles for 2007. The number of new vehicle registrations in December 2007 decreased by 10.5 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. Of 67,824 new vehicle registrations in December, 34,165 were for cars, followed by 18,136 for small trucks, 7,004 for motorcycles and 3,360 for tractors. Last year 66,840 vehicles were deleted from the traffic registry. In 2006 there were 1,149,744 new vehicle registrations and 68,177 deletions from the registry, with 1,081,567 new vehicles being registered.
