Plans for 3rd bridge in Bosphorus to be finalized in a month

A report detailing the feasibility of a highway project that includes the construction of a third bridge over the Bosporus will be submitted to the State Planning Organization (DPT) next month.

According to information provided by Ministry of Transportation officials yesterday, the most important part of the project is the building of a third bridge over the Bosporus. The route of the new bridge will stretch from Akyazı on the Anatolian side and the Kınalı junction on the European side.
Its route within the city borders of İzmit and the section between Hadımköy and Kınalı on the European side have been clarified; however, the project will be finalized once the route between Çatalca and Gebze on the Anatolian side is determined. The exact spot where the bridge will cross the Bosporus will be chosen after the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality carefully inspects the road, public utility and developmental impact on likely future residential areas and social facilities of the possible sites. One of the most significant challenges the project poses is that any chosen spot will most likely result in heavy traffic in the future. The ministry plans to open the project to bidding by 2009.
