AirTies, a Turkish wireless router producer, has launched Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), which enables wireless connection of multiple TV sets through a single satellite box.
The marketing of IPTV will first focus on the Russian market, after which AirTies will start marketing the product in Europe and the United States as well.
IPTV, which enables cable-free television, allows users to rent any broadcast at any time of the day and watch any TV channel in the world. It also has a catch-up function, which allows consumers to watch programs after they have been broadcast. IPTV also has a function that tailors advertisements according to the spectator’s preferences.
New approach to advertising:
“The tailored advertising services function of IPTV is an important aspect of the product. It will affect the media industry globally by changing the structure of advertising and cutting down on costs,” Bülent Çelebi, chairman and chief executive officer of AirTies told reporters in Istanbul yesterday.
In the beginning, the number of foreign channels available will depend on the local service provider. “But as the product becomes more widely used, it will be possible to watch any channel in the world through IPTV,” Çelebi said.
Russia to lead sales:
AirTies is focusing on Russia because of notable opportunities in the market. “One of the reasons we decided to enter the Russian market is that at present there are no other major IPTV providers like us. This means notable potential,” said Hakan Koçer, managing director of AirTies.
The firm expects Russia to be the leading market in the new product this year. “We expect most IPTV systems to be sold abroad in 2008. But we are also developing our sales strategy in Turkey. The demand for IPTV will spread with the development of Internet use in Turkey and the world. At present some eight million people in the world use IPTV. We expect this figure to reach 65 million by 2011,” Kocer said.
Çelebi noted that since its establishment in 2004, the business volume of AirTies has experienced considerable growth. “Last year our turnover almost doubled from $24 million to $46 million. In 2008 we expect our turnover to grow again by some 100 percent and reach approximately $75 million,” he said.
