Kemal Unakıtan receives European finance minister award

Turkish Finance Minister Kemal Unakıtan received the European Finance Minister of the Year Award for 2008 at a ceremony held in London yesterday.
The Financial Times Group’s The Banker magazine had selected Unakıtan as the 2008 finance minister of the year in Europe at the beginning of the year.The Banker magazine editor Karina Robinson said the award was officially given for his performance in 2007 but that it is also dedicated to his work in recent years that has carried the Turkish economy to great success. Robinson said the Turkish economy had experienced a good period amid the global financial turmoil in recent months. Robinson said some business professionals think the success of the Turkish economy was just the result of a global trend. “But we do not,” she said. She praised Turkey’s brilliant reform process and its fiscal discipline.
She told Unakıtan that he had done more than just win their votes and that he was respected by analysts and bankers all over the world. “Turkey became a stable country thanks to its economic success,” Robinson said.
Unakıtan said he was pleased to receive an award from one of the world’s most prestigious economy and banking magazines and he expressed his pleasure for the compliments for him and the Turkish economy.
