The Istanbul Stock Exchange (IMKB) has suffered the biggest decline due to global turbulence among a group of 59 major stock markets since the beginning of 2008, with a 21.7 percent drop, The Economist reported in its latest edition.
The periodical analyzed the performance of 59 major stock markets worldwide and found that the İMKB leads the list of those sustaining major losses for the period between Dec. 31, 2007, and March 5, 2008. Calculations were performed using the index values of the bourses in terms of their domestic currencies. The Greek bourse, ATHEX, recorded close to the same figure of decline and came in second. India’s BSE fell by 18.5 percent to place third. It was followed by the Chinese SSEA (18.4 percent), the German DAX (17.2 percent), Hong Kong’s HKEX (16.9 percent) and the Czech PX (16.7 percent). With respect to the calculations in terms of dollars, however, the biggest decline was seen in Venezuela’s IBC, which has lost 59.1 percent of its value since the beginning of the year. The İMKB came second on this list with a 24.1 percent drop, followed by the Indian BSE (20.2 percent) and Greek ATHEX (18.3 percent).
