Number portability, which allows mobile users to switch to another mobile carrier without changing their cell phone number, will start in Turkey in October.

Telecommunications Board (TK) President Tayfun Acarer held a press conference yesterday on the institution’s plans for 2008. He said preliminary studies on number portability will be completed by the end of April and that they would give mobile providers six months to adapt to the new system. He said mobile users will be able to change their providers without changing their numbers starting in October.

Referring to a recent appeal against the number portability move, he said if number portability is cancelled by the court it would cause large losses in the sector.

Acarer also noted that all villages and towns in which cellular phones are not currently supported will enter under the coverage area of mobile operators by the end of the year. The TK has ensured that Turkey’s three GSM operators will establish base stations in 2,764 such small-sized districts.
