Turkey’s production of automobiles increased by 34 percent in the first three months of the year, reaching 187,348 between January and March, while total vehicle production increased by 42.2 percent and reached 350,902 in the first quarter, according to the Automotive Manufacturers Association (OSD).

Production increased by 104 percent in minibuses, 58 percent in light trucks, 28 percent in small trucks, 15 percent in buses, 10 percent in big trucks and 7 percent in minibuses between January and March.  Production continues to rise due to a significant increase in demand and exports in March, according to the OSD.

Total vehicle sales increased by 26 percent and reached 128,720 in the first quarter, while consumption increased by 35.1 percent and reached 73,931. The market share of imported vehicles was 67 percent in the same period.

Total vehicle exports, meanwhile, increased by 45.8 percent and reached 276,114 units, while automobile exports increased by 34.9 percent and reached 151,940 units, compared to the corresponding period of 2007.

The share of the automotive industry in Turkey’s total exports reached 23 percent in the first quarter of the year.
