Mersin International Port Authority (MIP) General Director Peter Ong Kim Pong said yesterday that the Port of Mersin has the potential to become number one in the Mediterranean if it is properly used.

Pong was speaking at a meeting held on the occasion of the first anniversary of the establishment of the MIP at the HiltonSA Hotel in Mersin.  The PSA-Akfen joint venture had last year paid $755 million for the operating rights to Mersin Port for 36 years starting on May 11, 2007.  Pong said they were working hard to take advantage of the port’s potential, adding: “We made the port number one in Turkey. To become number one in the Mediterranean region, as well, it will be sufficient to rely on its potential, because of the port’s strategic location. We have made great strides thanks to the support of the city’s dynamics ever since we took over the enterprise.”
