The number of tourists visiting Turkey in the first four months of 2008 increased by 12.37 percent over the same period last year, reaching 4.63 million.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism yesterday announced the tourism statistics for April, noting that the number of visitors last month increased by 8.35 percent to 1.65 million compared to the same month last year.

As for country of origin of the visitors, Germany ranked first with 270,349 tourists, taking a 16.42 percent share of total tourism in April. Holland got the second spot with 110,140 visitors with a 6.68 percent share. Russia followed Holland with 109,044 visitors and a 6.62 percent share. Bulgaria, England, France, Iran, Georgia, Greece and Israel followed in descending order in April.

The number of Turkish citizens returning to Turkey from abroad increased by 12.56 percent to 773,072 in April compared to the same period last year, while the number of citizens leaving the country increased by 7.96 percent to 739,645.
