Turkish filmmaker Ceylan wins Cannes director award

Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan has taken out the Best Director Award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival with his drama Three Monkeys.

The director’s award, presented on the last day of the 61st Cannes festival, is one of the premier awards of the event and one of the highest forms of recognition that a director can receive. (more…)

Protect heritage, says participants at real estate meeting

Turkey’s impressive cultural and architectural heritage deserve preserving as developers turn a covetous eye to its coast, a world-renowned architect warned at a real estate symposium held Saturday in Bodrum.

“What differentiates architecture from construction is delight, which ensures sustainability,” said acclaimed architect and New York University professor Richard England, whose works may be found as far afield as Kazakhstan and Malta. “Architecture should create places for the soul, not just the body. An important element of this architecture is to create something with, and in which we can put, a bit of love.” (more…)

Turkish firms secure fresh deals in Gaziantep

The third “Iraq International Fair,” held in the southeastern city of Gaziantep, was deemed satisfactory by Turkish companies.

The fair, attended by more than 600 companies from 30 countries, has resulted in new sales and export opportunities. Many Turkish firms have secured new deals, while some decided to expand into international markets, thanks to the fair. (more…)

Germans prefer Turkey for all-inclusive holiday rates

A recent survey sponsored by tourism agent Öger Tur to evaluate the preferences of German tourists has shown that the latter largely favor Turkey as a holiday destination because of the all-inclusive rates at hotels.

Öger Tur General Manager Recep Yavuz noted that his agency attempted to determine the reasons behind German’s vacation picks in the survey. Speaking to the Anatolia news agency, Yavuz said 44 percent of the respondents also cited the wealth of options for children as one of the most important feature of Turkish hotels, a factor that cannot be found at many hotels in other countries. French energy firm to invest in Turkey

Areva T&D Division, one of three global players in the transmission and distribution of energy, decided to invest $105 million in Turkey.

Paris-based Areva will allocate $50 million for the first stage of the investment, and open one of the world’s biggest distribution transformer production facilities in Turkey. (more…)

Turkey surpassing Europe in outlet investments

Turkey is rapidly surpassing European countries in its investments in outlet stores, which sell out-of-season products at discounted prices.

Turkey is second in Europe in terms of leasable outlet area, with 382,781 square meters in 19 outlet malls. It follows England, which has 471,881 square meters of leasable outlet area in 29 outlet malls. Italy follows Turkey with 12 outlet malls. France comes next with 11 outlet malls. There are a total of 133 outlet malls in Europe, with 3.02 million square meters of leasable outlet area, while in America there are 222 outlet malls, with 5.57 million square meters. (more…)

South Korean giants have faith in Turkey for investments

Representatives of South Korean multinationals Hyundai Rotem and the SK Group have said they have confidence in the Turkish economy and will proceed with their planned investments in the country despite fluctuations in the market.

Turkish State Railways (TCDD) General Manager Süleyman Karaman met with Hyundai Rotem CEO Yeo Sung Lee during his visit to Seoul to see the first diesel locomotives that TCDD had ordered from Hyundai Rotem. The latter produces railway vehicles, defense products and plant equipment. (more…)

Number of tourists up by 12.4 percent in April

The number of tourists visiting Turkey in the first four months of 2008 increased by 12.37 percent over the same period last year, reaching 4.63 million.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism yesterday announced the tourism statistics for April, noting that the number of visitors last month increased by 8.35 percent to 1.65 million compared to the same month last year. (more…)
