Auto sector will need 500,000 workers

The rapidly growing Turkish automotive industry will need an additional 100,000 workers in the short term, 500,000 workers in the long term and 50,000 skilled workers in the near term, the head of the Association of Automotive Parts and Components Manufacturers (TAYSAD) has said.

In an interview with the Anatolia news agency yesterday, TAYSAD Chairman Ömer Burhanoğlu said the planned investments in the sector include $3.5 billion for capacity building, $2 billion for technological upgrades and $3.5 billion for new models. With these investments Burhanoğlu said investors in Turkey’s auto sector aim to increase annual auto production to 2 million by 2013 and to make $40 billion worth of exports.

He noted that the auto industry currently employs 250,000 workers, including those in the automotive spare parts sector, adding that the 252 TAYSAD member firms employ 73,000 workers, or 120,000 when suppliers are included.

Burhanoğlu said based on the sector’s 2013 goals, it will need up to 500,000 additional workers. He stated that this would create a need for skilled workers and that TAYSAD had launched vocational training programs in coordination with the Turkish Employment Institution (İş-Kur) to fill the need for such workers in the middle term.
