New data have revealed that the number of companies which closed down in the first half of the year was significantly higher compared to the same period last year, while fewer companies were opened so far this year compared to last.
The Trade Registry figures released yesterday by the Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB) showed that the number of liquidated companies climbed by 19.24 percent in the first half over the same period last year. Meanwhile the number of newly established companies dropped by 0.59 percent. Between January and June of 2007, 18,240 businesses had ceased operations; however, this number increased to 21,749 during the first half of this year, TOBB noted in a written statement. On the other hand, the number of newly opened companies dropped from 56,537 to 56,204. In June alone, 21.91 percent more companies shut down than in June of last year; however, the number of newly launched companies last month was up 5.58 percent.
