The number of the companies and consortiums seeking to take part in Turkey’s first nuclear power plant project has increased to eight, with the Chinese Nuclear Power Components Co. and Dutch Unit Investment N.V. purchasing bid specifications.

Turkish Electricity Trading and Contracting Company (TETAŞ) had initiated a tender for the construction and operation of a nuclear power plant in the Akkuyu district of Mersin province in March. TETAŞ General Manager Hacı Duran Gökkaya said on Thursday he was expecting interest in the project to grow in the coming months.

Speaking to the Anatolia news agency, he said TETAŞ is planning no change in the date of the final tender, which is currently planned to be held on Sept. 24 of this year. Companies and consortiums that have already received the specifications include Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. (Canada), Itochu Corporation (Japan), Vinci Construction Grand Projets (France), Suez Tractebel (France-Belgium), AtomStroyExport (Russia) and KEPCO (South Korea-Turkey). “Applications submitted so far are quite satisfying, and we expect more,” Gökkaya said.

Turkey plans to build a nuclear power plant with a capacity of 3,000-5,000 megawatts. TETAŞ will sign a contract with the lowest bidder to purchase the power generated in this nuclear plant for at least 15 years following the start of operation.
