Russian visitors to Turkey’s biggest tourism center, Antalya, have surpassed the number of tourists visiting the city from Germany for the first time since the beginning of the year.

Antalya received over 5 million foreign tourists in the first seven months of 2008, 1.27 million of them from Russia. This is a 27.64 percent increase over the same period last year. The number of German tourists increased by only 5.74 percent, for a total 1.21 million.

The latest numbers released by the Antalya Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism have shown that Dutch visitors were the next most frequent after the Germans. Other countries sending many tourists to Antalya include Ukraine, Israel, Britain and Austria.

The numbers also detailed visitor figures from July. Antalya International Airport received 1.52 million foreign visitors last month, a hefty 18 percent rise compared to the same month last year.
