US government representatives arrived in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, yesterday to participate in talks on natural gas with President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the Turkmen press has reported.

According to reports the US asked Turkmenistan to share its enormous energy resources with world markets and said the US is ready to provide any technical assistance to Turkmenistan in this process. President Berdimuhamedov noted that Turkmenistan is willing to cooperate with leading energy companies from the US to implement new projects to drill Turkmen oil and natural gas.

US Ambassador to the European Union C. Boyden Gray said at a press conference in Turkmenistan yesterday that they discussed the process of how to transport Turkmen natural gas to European countries via Turkey and Black Sea routes. “Our main aim is to help the countries in this region utilize their energy resources to the maximum in order to develop and prosper,” Gray noted.

Underlining that the European Union recently announced an interest in the Caspian Sea region’s oil and natural gas, Gray said the private sector should take action to undertake projects to transport natural gas. EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana recently declared that Europe was urgently in need of alternative fuel and natural gas sources.
