Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Ertuğrul Günay expects that the annual number of tourists visiting Turkey will be more than 25 million this year.

“Despite all the setbacks that the Turkish tourism sector saw in 2008, the number of foreign visitors will pass a critical threshold, reaching over 25 million by the end of the year,” Günay stated at a press conference in London, where he participated in the World Tourism Fair.

Günay said İstanbul, Turkey’s main commercial hub, has hosted over 6 million tourists to date and that over 8 million tourists had visited the southern resort city of Antalya. Noting that 1.9 million British tourists had traveled to Turkey so far this year, the minister said that number was expected to climb to 2.3 million by the end of the year. He added that they are endeavoring to increase the number of tourist attractions in Turkey by building new tourism facilities in different parts of the country. Günay also noted that the ministry is going to open agencies in Australia and Canada as well as a second one in Shanghai, in the next few days. He added that almost every country in the world has already opened tourism offices in Turkey.
