Soil-less agriculture helps save planet

With global warming becoming a bigger threat with every passing day, organic farming methods are becoming more popular. Among them, soil-less agriculture is an alternative method that is likely to contribute to protecting the future of the planet.

Called hydroponics, this system is also helpful in the prevention of soil damage, the growth of natural vegetables free of pesticides and increased productivity. (more…)

Efes buys Georgian brewer

Anadolu Efes, Turkey’s biggest brewer, agreed to buy Lomisi Ltd. to gain the largest brewer in Georgia, where sales are increasing more quickly than in its Turkish domestic market.

Lomisi has an annual capacity of about 600,000 hectoliters (503,200 barrels) and controls 42 percent of the Georgian beer market, Istanbul-based Anadolu Efes said on Friday in a stock-exchange filing. The company is buying Lomisi for an undisclosed price through its Efes Breweries International NV unit. (more…)

Qatar considers energy investment in Turkey

Qatar, the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas, is considering building facilities in Turkey to sell natural gas to European markets, President Abdullah Gül said yesterday.
On an official visit to Qatar, Gül held a news conference in Doha yesterday to inform the press about his meetings. He said he was pleased with his visit, adding that it has been a fruitful one. The president noted that they also exchanged views on energy, housing and the defense industry. (more…)

Turkey ranks 2nd in trust in government among EU countries

A staggering 84 percent of Turks consider the military to be the most trusted institution in the country, a recent Eurobarometer survey has revealed, and 63 percent have confidence in the government as Turkey ranks second among European Union member and candidate states.

The Eurobarometer is a survey conducted by the European Commission in all member and candidate states and at least twice a year. Its results on Turkey were announced earlier this month. (more…)

Russia, primary destination for job-seeking Turkish migrants

Turkish workers continue to go abroad for new job opportunities, but the destinations have changed drastically over time.
European countries, especially Germany, were the major choices for Turkish workers in the 1970s. Now Russia and Kazakhstan have replaced Europe as the primary destination for Turkish citizens seeking employment abroad. (more…)

Marlboro Intense spark nationwide reaction

A new, “snack-sized” mini-cigarette brand, Marlboro Intense, has recently been introduced to the Turkish market and sparked nationwide reaction after it was reported by several Turkish newspapers that the new cigarette is being tested first in Turkey.

Several anti-tobacco organizations and parliamentary deputies have raised concerns over Marlboro Intense following wide coverage in the news media that the new brand was being tested first on Turkish smokers, who are reportedly being used as guinea pigs for the product set to then be released in other countries. Marlboro Intense was introduced to the Turkish market in November 2007 by Philip Morris, a tobacco company partnered with Turkey’s Sabancı Holding. (more…)

Barley yield causes beer producers distress

Global warming, which is said to have adversely affected Turkey last year, has also affected beer producers.

Due to drought, Turkey’s barley yield dropped by 20 percent from 9.5 million tons to 7.4 million tons in 2007 from a year earlier. (more…)

United States, Turkey seek ‘green’ partnership

In an effort to provide momentum to clean energy partnerships between the United States and Turkey, members of government, scientific and private sector communities gathered in Istanbul for the Turkish-American Clean Energy Technologies Conference yesterday.

The conference, a first of its kind, aimed at providing a platform for U.S. scientists to share know-how on clean energy technologies and an opportunity for the Turkish industry to illustrate the opportunities in alternative energy investments. (more…)
